Ode to Fire!

it lies still for a moment in slumber
dormant and hidden
waiting;
waiting for the spark
slowly smoldering
and then it ignites all at once
bursting with a flash
flickering and exploding
bright colors of crimson red and amber yellow
flare up!
burning scorching hot
searing and fiery with incandescent light
blazing with a fever
sizzling with desire
illuminated with embers glowing so bright
torrid and sultry is this flame
all at once comes the rush of hunger
feasting upon anything
and everything
becoming big bellied
and overgrown
it consumes
and devours
all it touches
in its wake
it leaves ashes
and if left alone
it will simmer
smoke
die out
and then
nothing
it is
gone.....
